What are Orthotics?

Orthotic devices (‘orthotics’) are custom made devices that are worn inside the shoe to control abnormal foot function.   They also help to alleviate painful areas of the feet.  They can prevent many of the common foot complications that cause discomfort.   People of all ages may require orthotics depending on the foot or lower leg problem. 

Can my Orthotics be adjusted or modified?

Yes!  Since orthotics are manufactured in your absence, they may need some fine tuning to maximize their effectiveness.  There are no additional charges for adjustments to new orthotics within the first 3 months of receiving them. 

How are Orthotics made?

The Chiropodist examine your feet including watching you walk.  Next, impressions are taken using 3D scanning or casting to capture the exact shape of your feet.  This results in a ‘true’ custom made foot orthoses.   All information collected at your appointment including biomechanical assessments and scans are combined and provided to our orthotics laboratory for manufacturing.

​Once the orthotics have been manufactured and arrive at our clinic, they are checked by the Chiropodist for quality assurance purposes and modifications made as required prior to booking an orthotic fitting appointment.  

How should I care for my Orthotics?

Orthotics can be washed with mild soap and water and air dried.   Be sure to keep your orthotics away from high heat.

How long will my Orthotics last?

This will depend on the amount they are worn, your weight and the activity they are used for.  However, a general rule of thumb is approximately 2-3 years.   You may need to replace the top covers and other additions periodically.   Fees for repairs vary according to the amount of material and labour required.
