What is Metatarsalgia?

Q. What is Metatarsalgia?

A: Metatarsalgia (met-uh-tahr-SAL-juh) is one of the more common causes of pain in the ball of your foot (the padded area under your toes). It occurs when the metatarsals of your foot become inflamed.

Metatarsalgia is a common over use injury. The primary symptom of metatarsalgia is pain at the end of one or more of the metatarsal bones. The pain is typically aggravated when walking, running or jumping. Some factors that can contribute to pain in the ball of your foot are: High levels of activity, prominent metatarsal heads, a Hammertoe deformity and ill-fitting footwear.
